Composite Drawing for Law Enforcement: Update 1, Workshop 1

Summary:
Workshop 1 was developed as a follow up course for composite artists completing the Basic course. Experience has shown that the topics offered in program are the most likely to be encountered by the working composite artist.
Fees: $695. California POST students are $650.
Course fee includes workbook and handouts. Bring current supplies. $600 if signing up for both Basic and Workshop I. Two or more participants from the same department: $600 per participant.
Objectives
- Introduction:
- Policies and procedures are explained. Necessary forms are filled out. Students are asked to introduce themselves and describe their backgrounds and expectations of the course. The instructors introduce themselves.
- Aging of adults:
- The purpose is to age the face of an adult to be able to age known suspect's faces which have been missing for a period of time as well as to be able to render age lines on the faces of composites Through overhead image, a face is aged on a step-by-step basis. Students are given a photograph of a face to add and subtract signs of aging. The aged face is later provided.
- Multiple Witness Interviewing:
- The purpose is to perform multiple witness interviews in order to provide a single drawing utilizing the stronger memory of several witnesses. Through demonstration and lecture, students are shown how to interview multiple witnesses for a composite. Students divide into groups to perform a multiple witness composites.
- Drawing female faces:
- The purpose is to draw the face, understanding the racial and proportional differences in female Caucasian and African American faces in order to provide additional identification differences. Students are shown in overhead form, the facial differences in rendering a drawing of a female face Vs a male face.
- Accessory Items:
- The purpose is to be able to draw hats, glasses and other accessory items on the composite face in order to provide additional identification information. Students are shown how to render glasses, hats and other accessories.
- Racial Groups:
- Mongolian: The purpose is to be able to draw male and female Mongolian facial features in order to be able to identify unknown suspects of this race. Students are shown a series of slides of various racial groups with an emphasis on Mongolian races. Overheads are shown of the focal racial features. Students draw a composite of a Mongolian from witness description.
- Heavy Faces:
- The purpose is to be able to draw the faces of heavy people in order to add weight and draw the effect of weight on the face for identification. Composite situations are presented where students draw heavy faces from witness descriptions.
